Dairy-Free Cake Mixes: Complete Guide with Gluten-Free & Vegan (2024)

Custom order cakes can be very expensive, especially with special diet needs. Fortunately, baking your own can be affordable and very easy, especially if you use dairy-free cake mixes! This extensive round-up has every brand and flavor option we could find, including classic, organic, gluten-free, vegan, keto, paleo, and some unique favorites. I’ve also provided handy preparation tips and substitution options, if needed.

Dairy-Free Cake Mixes: Complete Guide with Gluten-Free & Vegan (1)

Allergen Notes: All items listed below are dairy-free by ingredients. But ingredients are subject to change at any time, and all products are at some degree of risk for allergen cross contamination, whether they have a “may contain” statement or not. Always read the label before consuming any food, and make sure you are familiar with this may contain information. Always verify the ingredients before purchasing, and contact the manufacturer to discuss their protocols if concerned about potential allergen cross contamination. Only you can decide what is safe for your needs.

Where to Buy: Baking mixes are sold in the baking aisle of grocers and markets, but because they’re shelf-stable, they’re easy to find online. The names below are linked to places for purchase. Some of them are affiliate links to retailers that we buy from, too. We might receive a commission if you make purchases through these links. These commissions do notdirect our content, but do help to support the maintenance of our site. We appreciate your support!

Dairy-Free Cake Mix Preparation

Many of the dairy-free cake mixes listed in this post have dairy-free preparation, too! A lot of them call simply for oil, eggs, and liquid. But here is a quick guide to substitutions, as needed:

Milk: You can substitute your favorite unsweetened dairy-free milk alternative. In most cases, you could also substitute water.

Butter: Dairy-free buttery sticks will be the best substitute for flavor, but shortening will also work in a pinch. In most cases, oil works as a suitable substitute in cake. If using oil, you won’t cream it, so the cake will be a little less fluffy.

Buttermilk: If the mix calls for buttermilk, add 1 tablespoon white vinegar or apple cider vinegar to a glass measuring cup. Then add enough milk alternative to reach the amount of buttermilk the recipe calls for.

Sour Cream: You can use a store bought dairy-free sour cream alternative, or make your own with our Tofu Sour Cream or Cashew Sour Cream recipes.

Vegan / Egg-Free Needs: A few of the mixes below have vegan preparations, while some won’t perform well with egg substitutes. But, in many cases, you can use an option from our Egg Substitute Guide or you can try our 2-Ingredient Cake Mix Preparation.

Dairy-Free Cake Mixes with Gluten-Free & Vegan Options

We’ve listed these dairy-free cake mixes alphabetically by brand, with some pertinent dietary information for each brand. Please note that not all cake mixes from every brand are made without dairy. We’ve listed only those cake mixes that were milk-free by ingredients at the time of our review.

Special Diet Notes: Most of these dairy-free cake mixes are vegan-friendly, unless otherwise noted. We have clearly labeled the gluten-free options. Items containing eggs and/or nuts have also been noted. We have not labeled specifically for soy, since soy isn’t often clear on mix labels. Many brands use highly refined soy, which the FDA does not require to be disclosed.
