We all know that the best partnerships are the ones that are unexpected, and today we’ll be discussing our very favourite unexpected partnership – coffee and sparkling water. The logic

If you’re a coffee fanatic, you’ll take time to find the best possible beans, which you’ll grind in the most upmarket machine, to make the finest tasting cup of coffee. But are you allowing yourself to enjoy the taste properly? By drinking sparkling water prior to drinking your cup of coffee, you will cleanse your palate before the first sip of coffee, so that you can fully appreciate the flavour, and filter out more intense flavours that may overpower the taste.

Due to the levels of acidity within coffee, drinking coffee can adversely affect your stomach lining and intestines. Sparkling water has been found to ease indigestion and irritation within the stomach. By drinking a cool glass of sparkling water, you provide your stomach with a layer of protection from the acidity of the coffee.

The evidence

Don’t just take our word for it, in many Middle Eastern countries, sparkling water is served with espresso as a matter of course. Coffee acts as a mild diuretic (a diuretic is a substance that dehydrates us), and drinking complementary sparkling water after coffee consumption can assist in maintaining hydration and energy.

In the famous Viennese coffee houses (you can read a lot more about that, here), patrons frequently linger in the coffee shop after drinking their coffee, often switching to an alcoholic drink or dessert. Sparkling or soda water is served alongside coffee, to enable customers to cleanse their palates so that the flavours of the coffee does not affect the taste of wine, or other alternative drinks.

Sparkling water: The coffee accompaniment

Providing sparkling water alongside coffee in your workplace, office, or establishment not only improves the flavour and digestion of coffee, but also allows staff and guests additional hydration choice.
