Without a doubt, there is always a can of coconut milk in my refrigerator.

I use both storebought (here are the best coconut milk brands) and homemade coconut milk daily in my baking, beverages, and my meals. It’s a staple in my home.

That being said, I often only need to use a small portion of coconut milk in my recipes and will have leftovers. So how do I store leftover coconut milk? Can I freeze coconut milk? These are the kind of questions I get a lot, so I thought I’d dedicate a blog post to this topic.

How To Store Leftover Coconut Milk

Leftover coconut milk can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. If you use coconut milk often, this is the best way to preserve your coconut milk.(If you leave it out, it’ll spoil between quickly.)

Can You Freeze Coconut Milk?

Yes, coconut milk does freeze well. I measure my coconut milk and pour it into ice cube trays and silicon bowls. My ice cube trays will have two tablespoons in each cube, and my silicon bowl is one cup.

I like having large and small quantities of frozen coconut milk in my freezer for various recipes. It’s good to measure out the milk before freezing so you know how much you have when you defrost it for recipes. Frozen coconut milk will last in the freezer for up to one month.

How To Defrost Coconut Milk

It’s best to leave the coconut milk in the fridge to defrost. This usually takes 8-12 hours, depending on how much coconut milk there is. But if you need to defrost it quickly, the microwave will work in a pinch.

Coconut milk can “break” after being frozen. I’ve found that the best way to restore coconut milk to its creamy state is to use an immersion blender to blend it back up into milk.
