Root beer in an iconic American soft drink, but did you know that it also makes a terrific mixer for spirits? Today we’re sharing a few of our favourite ways to drink root beer, like the A&W Root Beer which is available from our store.

A&W Root Beer with Rum
A&W Root Beer with RumRoot beer goes great with rum, as they share a sweet, vanilla-y flavour. This combination is particularly good with a strong, spiced rum like The Kraken, which has a dark and rich flavour which complements the lighter, fizzy root beer. Use in proportions of around 1 part rum to 4 parts A&W.
A&W Root Beer with Jägermeister
Root beer has spicy notes which match great with herbal liqueurs like Jägermeister. This traditional German liqueur is thick, deep, and herby, and the addition of root beer give it a light, gingery taste.
A&W Root Beer with vodka
Of course, as it has a light and subtle flavour, vodka goes with nearly everything. We’re particularly fond of the combination of root beer with flavoured vodkas like cinnamon rollor even cake! This sweet and tasty combination of spicesand A&W will take you right back to your childhood.
A&W Root Beer with Fireball Whiskey
Hot cinnamon whiskey adds an amazing spicy kick to your A&W root beer. Over in the US, this combination is very popular in bars and clubs, where Fireball Whiskey is all the rage right now.

If you’re a bourbon fan, adding root beer might sound like sacrilege – but trust us, it’s good! This combination is great for parties when you’ve got a bottle of cheap and cheerful bourbon to share. The A&W brings out the sweetness in the bourbon for an eminently sippable drink.

We’ve talked before about RumChata – a creamy rum liqueur with the taste of horchata – and how to mix it. But here’s another great idea for a mixed drink: RumChata and root beer. This combination makes a fluffy, fizzy, frothy concoction which is like a boozy root beer float. Yum! Some brands of root beer are too acidic for this and make the RumChata curdle, but A&W is perfect when mixed 3 parts to 1 part RumChata.

Naturally, you can mix up a great non-alcoholic root beer float using A&W too! Just add a scoop of soft vanilla ice cream to a tall glass and top it up with root beer for a sweet and creamy treat. If you’re looking for ways to adult-ify this childhood favourite, then you could add in a shot of chocolate or whipped cream vodka.
