Australia's richest towns revealed (2024)

The eastern suburbs of Sydney and Melbourne can no longer lay claim to being Australia's richest.

As the nation's mining industry continues to drive the economy, so too does it continue to drive incomes.

Economists at CommSec took a closer look at this year's census data to reveal each state and territory's wealthiest suburb.

The postcode 6710, which covers a slice of North-Western Australia from the Pilbara town of Cane to the coastal town of Onslow, is officially Australia's richest, with residents earning a median wage of $2,000 a week, or $104,000 a year.

The mining towns of Alyangula in the Northern Territory and May Downs, near Mackay in Queensland, both boast a median income of more than $1,500.

Roxby Downs, home to BHP Billiton's Olympic Dam site, is the wealthiest South Australian town while Sydney's harbourside suburb of Kirribilli is the richest in New South Wales.

Further south, there is evidence of more traditional forms of wealth, with Canberra in the ACT, East Melbourne in Victoria and Cremorne in Tasmania each found to be the wealthiest towns in their state.

In a list of Australian towns with the highest median income, the top 13 all came from Western Australia.
