For many people it's their favorite part of the meal. The word dessert comes from the French word desservir - meaning to clear away. In this case, clear away the table and make room for something sweet to eat. You might be able to name them yourself. You might have the order a little bit different, but according to TLC Network and HowStuffWorks - here is a list of America's Top 5 favorite desserts.

    Cheesecake

The first recipes for cheesecake date back to ancient Greece. Athletes at the first Olmpic Games were served small servings of cheesecake. The most popular version of cheesecake is the New York style made with cream cheese, eggs, cream, sugar and graham cracker crust. Some like fruit toppings on it - most people like it just plain.

    Chocolate Cake

Cake has been around since the ancient Egyptians, but it wasn't until the late 1600's that the first chocolate cake came along after the Spanish introduced chocolate to Europe. It's not only America's favorite cake - it's the most favorite cake in the world.

    Ice Cream

The Chinese were enjoying flavored ice as far back as 3000 BC. Marco Polo brought the idea back to Italy in the 1600's. The first recipe for ice cream in this country appeared in a cookbook "The New Art of Cookery" in 1792. It was for vanilla ice cream and by far vanilla is America's favorite flavor. Chocolate is a distant second.
