Acid rain, or acid deposition, is a broad term that includes any form of precipitation with acidic components, such as sulfuric or nitric acid that fall to the ground from the atmosphere in wet or dry forms. This can include rain, snow, fog, hail or even dust that is acidic.

Typical acid rain has a pH value of 4.0. A decrease in pH values from 5.0 to 4.0 means that the acidity is 10 times greater. There are many high-tech devices that are used to measure pH in laboratories.

Acid rain can leach copper, aluminum, and other heavy metals out of the soil and into runoff and drinking water. This process in turn puts more harmful materials in the water and soil, thus reducing the populations of organisms in the waterbody or soil.
