Beginning today, July 13, a new series of Oreoswith lesscookie and less cream filling areavailable at Dallas-area grocery stores.

Oreo Thins area more "sophisticated" cookie, the company says. No dunking, no twisting, just eating. (Pinkies up, we had to wonder?)

So we asked about a dozen Dallas Morning News staffers -- pretty sophisticated adults, I'd say -- and told them Oreos went on a diet. Their response:

You have to wonder about Double Stuf Oreo's self-esteem.

We sampled three Oreo Thins: the original, the golden Oreo and the mint. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Oreo purists, don't fret: These CANbe twisted apart. Just take a cookie in each hand, give a gentle turn of the wrist like the outlaw you are, and your cookie will have two halves. Go ahead, illegally twist apartyour Oreo Thins.
  2. Oreo Thins arenot better thantraditional Oreos. We love them the way they were meant to be --before these wafers decided theyneeded to be waifs. The Oreo Thins' cream-to-cookie ratio is off, despite the fact that the company says it's"similar." Oreo Thins were not as crunchy andnot as satisfying as originalOreos, andno one in our test group would choose them over the old favorite. We did agree you can trick your Oreo Thininto tasting like half of a traditional Oreo if you twist it apart and only eat one side. That's a lot of work for little gain, though. Wasteful, too.
  3. The golden Oreo Thins are forgettable. They're notexciting. They're just skinnier golden Oreos.
  4. The mint Oreo Thins are surprisingly great. These are almost as good as the Girl Scouts' Thin Mints cookies. Almost. We were able to set aside our original Oreo allegiances and consider mint Oreo Thins as their own kind of cookie. Because of their size, it would be easy to eat a handful of these mindlessly. They're tasty. Which brings us to this point:
  5. Don't buy Oreo Thins if you think you're making a "healthier" choice. An Oreo Thinruns about 35 calories per cookie. An original Oreogoes for approximately 53 calories per cookie. Is it worth 18 extra calories to eat one original Oreo-- a cookie we believe ismarkedly better? Absolutely. But just remember: Oreos were not before and are not now "healthy."
