How to add protein to dairy free smoothie recipes
Here’s one important thing to note. Dairy not only adds creaminess to smoothies, it adds protein. In fact, we add Greek yogurt to most of our smoothie recipes because it’s so high in protein and keeps you full longer. Want to add back some protein to these dairy free smoothies? Here are some ideas:
- Nut butter.A great way to add plant based protein to a smoothie: add a scoop of nut butter! Trypeanut butter, cashew butter, oralmond butter. For nut allergies, use sunflower butter. Nut butter will slightly alter the flavor and color of the smoothie, so air on the modest side.
- Chia seeds! Two tablespoons of chia seeds add 4 grams protein and 11 grams fiber to a smoothie (see thisChia Seed Smoothie).
- Protein powder.Protein powder is an easy way to load on the protein. A vanilla flavored powder melds well into most smoothie flavors. Try not to go overboard or the aftertaste will be overpowering.
